Worlebury Camp

Iron Age earthworks sprawl across Worlebury Hill above Weston-super-Mare, where ancient ramparts and ditches carved 2,000 years ago still mark the landscape. This hilltop fort commanded sweeping views over the Bristol Channel - and still does today.

Walking the perimeter takes about an hour, following the raised banks that once formed defensive walls. The site covers roughly 10 acres, with the most impressive earthworks on the seaward side where the hill drops steeply toward the coast. History enthusiasts will appreciate the preserved layout, though there's precious little signage to explain what you're looking at.

Families with older children who don't mind a decent uphill walk will enjoy the adventure, but pushchairs are definitely out. The paths can get muddy after rain, and there's no shelter if the weather turns.

From holiday parks around Burnham-on-Sea like Warren Farm or Diamond Farm, it's a straightforward drive to combine with a trip to nearby Weston-super-Mare. The fort sits conveniently close to the town if you're already planning a seaside day out. Free to explore whenever you fancy, though the hilltop can be properly exposed to coastal winds. Best saved for clear days when those ancient views across to Wales are at their most spectacular.
