Workhouse Museum

The Workhouse Museum in Ripon gives you a properly sobering look at what life was actually like for the poorest people in Victorian England. You walk through rooms where families were separated, where children worked, where meals were thin gruel served in near-silence. It's not cheerful - it's deliberately not - but that's exactly why it matters.

The building itself is the old Union Workhouse, and staff have restored it to show how inmates lived from the 1850s onwards. You'll see the dormitories, the kitchens, the punishment cells. There's a garden too, which the residents would have tended as part of their labour. It's a stark contrast to the manicured parks you might visit elsewhere in the area.

History buffs and teachers bring groups here regularly, and rightly so. It's educational without being preachy. Families with older children (secondary school age upwards) will get something real from it; younger kids might find it a bit heavy. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice.

Based near Ripon's town centre, it works well as a half-day visit if you're staying at Riverside Meadows Caravan Park just down the road, or Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park a bit further out.
