Worbarrow Tout

The walk up Worbarrow Tout is steep and brief - you'll be at the top in twenty minutes or so, which means most people finish it feeling slightly cheated. That's the thing about Dorset's coastal peaks: they look grander from a distance than they feel underfoot. That said, the view back towards Wareham and across the Purbeck landscape is genuinely worth the leg work, especially on a clear day when you can see for miles inland. The summit itself is modest - a grassy bump with a trig point - but the isolation makes it feel special. You're not fighting crowds or queueing for anything; it's just you, the wind, and the rolling countryside.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's straightforward enough for families with older kids who don't mind a bit of gradient, but little ones might find it frustrating given how quick the whole thing is over. The approach is accessible year-round and free, obviously - it's open moorland. Allow an hour if you're taking photos and sitting about at the top; half that if you're just after the ascent.

Staying at one of the caravan parks around Wareham - Luckford Wood or Norden Farm are closest - puts you within easy reach of Worbarrow Tout as a morning expedition before heading elsewhere in the Purbeck area. It pairs well with a longer day exploring the coast nearby. Not a destination in itself, but a proper little diversion that gives you a proper sense of the landscape you're camping in.
