Woodlands Park

The reserve sits just east of Tilbury, a proper working chunk of Essex rather than the manicured kind. Woodlands Park is woodland and wetland combined - 45 hectares of it - and the paths wind through both without fussing about it. You'll see the usual Essex birds, the occasional deer if you're quiet, and in winter the water meadows flood in a way that makes you understand why this corner of the Thames estuary matters ecologically.

Walkers get the most from it. The circuit takes a solid hour without rushing, longer if you stop to identify things or just sit on a bench. Birdwatchers should bring proper binoculars - the wetland pools are where things happen. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're genuinely into spotting wildlife. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared.

It's free to access and there's no set visiting hours, which means you can turn up at dawn for the serious birding crowd or pop in mid-afternoon on a weekday when it's completely quiet. Spring is when the migrants come through and the paths are genuinely busy with twitchers.
