Woodington's Copse

A proper woodland walk on the edge of Witney, Woodington's Copse is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Ancient trees, tangled undergrowth, and paths that feel like they've been trodden for centuries - this is genuine English forest, not a manicured country estate.

The copse itself is small enough to explore in an hour or so, which makes it ideal for families wanting to tire out restless kids without committing to a full day's hiking. Dog walkers absolutely love it. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though after rain they can get boggy underfoot, so proper boots aren't just a nice idea. Woodland enthusiasts will appreciate the mix of oak and beech - it's managed forestry rather than wild, but done with real care.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no fanfare. You just turn up and go in. Best visited in autumn when the light filters through properly, or spring when the bluebells are out. Summer can feel a bit airless and buggy.
