The earthworks at Woodhill near Swindon don't announce themselves loudly, which is rather the point. What you're looking at are the remains of an Iron Age settlement - low banks and ditches that have survived two and a half millennia of Wiltshire weather and agricultural use. It's subtle stuff, the kind of place that rewards patience and a decent OS map.

You'll spend maybe thirty minutes here if you're properly interested in archaeology, less if you're just after a countryside walk. The site sits within rolling farmland, so bring decent boots; it can get muddy depending on the season. There's something oddly satisfying about standing in the footsteps of people who lived here before the Romans showed up, even if what remains is more suggestion than spectacle.

History enthusiasts will get the most from Woodhill, particularly if you've already visited some of the bigger Wiltshire monuments. It's the sort of place that makes sense as part of a broader archaeological crawl rather than a standalone trip. Families with younger children might find it less gripping than a hillforts with better views or more dramatic ramparts.

If you're staying at Blackland Lakes or Park Farm Campsite - both solid options within six miles - Woodhill works as a morning detour before heading elsewhere. The Retreat Glamping is similarly close. Nothing costs you anything to visit, though you'll want to check access with local farmers first. Spring and autumn are best; summer can feel too warm for wandering low ground, and winter waterlogging makes the paths treacherous.
