The Green Man carving in Witney is a striking piece of wooden sculpture that stops you dead in your tracks. It's the sort of thing you walk past a dozen times before actually looking up, and then you can't unsee it. The craftmanship is genuinely impressive - the detail in the foliage, the expression, the way it commands the space it occupies. This isn't some twee gallery installation; it's a proper artistic statement carved in wood.

It works best as part of a broader Witney wander rather than a destination in itself. The town has reasonable high street shopping and some decent pubs, so you can easily spend a couple of hours exploring. If you're staying at Lincoln Farm Park Partnership or Hardwick Parks just outside town, it's a straightforward walk in and back.

History buffs will appreciate that Witney has real medieval bones - it's not just the carving. The Real Campsite over towards Burford gives you a better base if you want to range further afield into the Cotswolds proper.

There's no charge to look at it (it's street-level public art), and you can see it in about five minutes if you're in a hurry. Kids will find it interesting for roughly that length of time unless they're into woodland folklore. On balance, it's worth the detour if you're in the area anyway, but don't rearrange your holiday around it. The real value is in using Witney as a working market town with something genuinely artistic to stumble upon.
