Wood Hill

The walk up Wood Hill takes about twenty minutes from Dunfermline and rewards you with proper views across the Firth of Forth. It's not high - only 190 metres or so - but it's steep enough to get the heart working and give you that satisfying sense of achievement when you reach the top.

What you get is a panorama. On a clear day you can see across to Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills beyond. The woodland itself is pleasant, though it's the vista that justifies the climb. Families with kids will manage it fine; it's short and direct with no faffing about. History buffs might find it less engaging than some Fife walks, but walkers will appreciate the efficiency of it - you're up, you've had a look, you're down within an hour.

There's nothing fancy here. No visitor centre, no refreshments at the summit, just a bit of open ground and the reward of the sight. Go early on a weekday if you want peace, or accept that weekends bring other locals with the same idea.

It pairs well with the holiday parks dotted nearby - Green Oak Nature Retreat is less than five miles away, and West Fife Pods even closer.
