Wolseley Nature Reserve

You'll find yourself walking through 270 acres of wetland and woodland just outside Rugeley - a proper working nature reserve that feels genuinely off the beaten track. The reserve is split into distinct habitats: open water, reedbed, grassland, and scrub woodland. Bird watchers come here specifically for sightings of wildfowl, warblers, and the occasional rarer visitor. In winter the water attracts overwintering birds; spring brings breeding season activity; summer offers dragonflies and damselflies in impressive numbers.

The walking trails are straightforward enough, though you'll want decent boots if it's been wet - the ground gets boggy in places. Allow two to three hours if you're taking binoculars and actually stopping to look, or an hour if you're just after a decent walk. Bring a camera with a decent zoom if you've got one; you'll regret leaving it behind.

This works brilliantly alongside a stay at one of the nearby parks. Canalside Camping sits just 2.4 miles away, making it a easy morning visit before heading elsewhere, while The White Lodge, also close by, gives families the option of a quieter nature-focused day without leaving the area. If you're not a dedicated birdwatcher, honest answer: after an hour you've seen what there is to see. But if you know your warblers from your whitethroats, you could happily spend half a day here.
