Wollaton Park and Museum

The Elizabethan mansion at Wollaton Park commands its hilltop like something from a Tudor fever dream - all turrets and symmetry, built by the Willoughby family back in 1588 and still stopping people in their tracks. Inside, the museum sprawls across multiple rooms with natural history collections, decorative arts, and furniture that speaks to Nottinghamshire's industrial heritage. You'll spend a good two hours here if you're thorough, though forty minutes works if you're just after the grand rooms and the view down the park.

The real draw for families is the surrounding 500 acres of parkland. There's a lake, woodland walks that don't demand proper hiking boots, and enough open space that kids can actually run about without your heart in your mouth. On a decent day it feels genuinely removed from Nottingham itself, despite being so close to the city centre.

History buffs will engage with the collections, though it's not quite the revelatory experience some might hope for - it's more a solid local museum than a jaw-dropper.
