Winterfold Hill

The walk up Winterfold Hill rewards you with proper Surrey countryside views - rolling fields, distant woodlands, and on a clear day, the landscape rolls away in all directions. It's not dramatic like the South Downs, but it's pleasant enough, and the climb only takes about forty minutes from the car park, so nobody gets too grumpy about it.

You get to the summit and there's a decent vantage point across the Weald. The paths up are well-maintained, mixing woodland tracks with open grassland. It's straightforward walking - nothing technical, though it can get boggy after rain. Families with kids aged eight and up won't struggle here, though younger ones might need a bit of encouragement on the way up.

The real appeal is combining this with a weekend based out of one of the nearby glamping spots - Surrey Hills Yurts is less than six miles away, and The Green Escape offers a proper base if you want something more luxurious. You can string together several walks in the area without too much driving about.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. Weekends bring the crowds, and the car park fills up quickly. Autumn's the sweet spot - crisp air, clear visibility, and the beech woods are worth the trip on their own. It's free to walk, takes a couple of hours total including the summit dawdle, and fits neatly into a longer day exploring the Surrey Hills near Guildford. Worth doing once, especially if you're camping nearby.
