Winter Hill National Trust

Winter Hill sits above Marlow, a proper vantage point that rewards the climb with views across the Thames valley and, on clear days, as far as the Cotswolds. It's National Trust land, which means the footpaths are well-maintained and there's nowhere you shouldn't be. The hill itself is modest - nothing Alpine - but the open grassland at the top makes it feel bigger than it is, and the walk up takes about 45 minutes from the town.

You're looking at open moorland dotted with birch and bracken rather than a dramatic summit. Walkers get the most from this one, particularly those doing a longer loop that takes in the Thames Path below. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin on attractions - there's no visitor centre, café, or anything to dawdle over. But if you're after a proper leg-stretcher with a genuine payoff, it delivers.

The National Trust owns it, so entry is free if you're a member, and there's no charge otherwise. Best visited in autumn or early spring when the light's honest and you won't overheat on the climb. If you're camping at Shillingridge Glamping or the other riverside sites nearby, Winter Hill makes an excellent half-day excursion. It connects well with exploring Marlow itself - the town's worth a wander - and keeps you moving between your pitch and the surrounding Chilterns. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
