Winnow

The walk up Winnow isn't particularly long, but it's relentless. Starting from near Dalton-in-Furness, the path climbs steadily through moorland that changes character as you gain height - rough grass gives way to rockier ground, and suddenly the views open up completely. You're looking out across Morecambe Bay towards the Lake District peaks, and on a clear day it's genuinely arresting. The summit itself is modest - a proper fell top rather than some dramatic crag - but that's rather the point. There's something satisfying about peaks that don't announce themselves.

This works brilliantly as part of a wider walking day around Furness. Winnow sits on the fringe of proper mountain country, close enough to feel like you're doing something worthwhile but not so remote that you need a dawn start. Families with older kids (say, eight plus) will manage it fine, though younger walkers might find the steady gradient a bit tedious. The real attraction is for people who actually enjoy moorland walking rather than those after Instagram shots.

Give yourself two to three hours round trip. There's no cafe or facilities at the top, so pack water and a snack. The Furness peninsula doesn't get the crowds of Ambleside or Windermere, which means you'll likely have the summit to yourself. If you're camping at High Haume Glamping or Harbour Lights, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading to the Lakes proper. It's also free - just park sensibly and go.
