Windyrise

The walk up Windyrise isn't long, but it feels proper rewarding once you crest the top. From Lochwinnoch, it's a straightforward climb that won't leave you gasping for breath - even with kids in tow, you're looking at under an hour to reach the summit. The views across Renfrewshire open up as you climb, and on a clear day you can see enough to justify the effort. The peak itself is modest compared to what you might attempt further west, but that's rather the point. It works well if you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean and want a proper hill walk without the full expedition faff.

Windyrise gets busy on weekends, which is telling. Locals know it. The ground can be boggy in patches, so decent boots matter more than you'd think. Allow time for a gentle pace - rushing defeats the purpose. Families with children aged eight-plus will manage it without complaint, though younger kids might find the return leg tedious. The wind does pick up at the top, hence the name, so dress in layers. There's no café or facilities at the summit, so bring water.
