Windmill Hill Wood

Walking into Windmill Hill Wood feels like stepping back into something properly old. The trees have been here for centuries, their roots grip the hillside, and you get the sense that not much has changed since the windmill that gave the place its name stood grinding away. The woodland itself is dense and atmospheric - oak and beech mostly, with enough open patches to keep things interesting rather than claustrophobic.

It's a decent spot for a woodland walk, especially if you're based at Lakeside View Caravan Park just down the road near Castlewellan. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though after rain they can get boggy in places - wear proper boots. Allow a good hour to two hours depending on how thorough you want to be. Families with younger kids might find it a bit steep for what it is in places, though the walk itself isn't punishing.

Historically minded visitors will get more from it - there's real local heritage woven through the trees, though you'll need to do your homework beforehand as there's not much signage. The real appeal is the peace of it. You won't find crowds here, and that's rare enough these days. It's the sort of walk you do when you want to actually think, not when you want to tick a box.

Free to access, which is how woodland walking should be. Winter's probably best - fewer insects, clearer views through the bare branches. Summer can feel a touch oppressive under the full canopy.
