Windmill Hill

The windmill itself is long gone, but Windmill Hill near Atherstone still commands the landscape in a way that draws you up for the view alone. It's a proper vantage point - the sort of spot locals clearly know about because you'll find worn paths and the occasional bench, but it never feels rammed with visitors.

What you're really here for is the panorama across Leicestershire. On a clear day it's worth the climb; on a grey one it's moody and atmospheric in that very British way. The hill itself is manageable - not a gruelling trek, but enough of a walk to feel like you've actually gone somewhere rather than just popped to a lay-by.

Walkers and landscape photographers will get the most from it. Kids might find the ascent tedious unless they're the outdoorsy type, and there's not much to do once you're up there except look about and take photos. That said, if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Atherstone Stables or Lime Tree are close by - it's an excellent leg-stretcher on a morning before heading elsewhere.

There's no admission charge and no facilities to speak of, so go with sensible shoes and whatever weather's coming. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're taking your time. It works best as part of a broader walk around the area rather than a destination in itself, but as a proper local spot with genuine views, it's well worth knowing about.
