Winding House

The Winding House sits quietly on the edge of Saundersfoot, a relic from the days when coal was king in these valleys. It's the engine house that once hauled trucks up and down the steep incline of Saundersfoot Beach - a bit of industrial archaeology that most visitors walk straight past without noticing. From outside, it's modest: a squat stone building with narrow windows, the kind of thing you'd miss if you weren't looking. But step inside and you're standing in the beating heart of a Victorian colliery operation.

You can walk round it freely, any time of day. The access is simple and it won't swallow your afternoon - a good twenty minutes if you're actually interested, less if you're just ticking it off. Families with older kids who like a bit of history will get something from it; younger ones might lose interest once they've had a look round. The real value is standing in that space and thinking about the hundreds of men who worked here, the ropes, the coal dust, the engineering that made it all turn.

It works well as a stop if you're based at Becks Bay Camping nearby. Combine it with a proper walk along Saundersfoot Beach itself - that's where the real draw is - or head further along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. The Winding House is the bones of the story; the beach is where you actually feel it.
