Wind Hill

Wind Hill is a proper forest walk just outside Mintlaw in Aberdeenshire, the kind of place where you can disappear into Scottish woodland without needing a map or planning permission. The paths wind through mature trees with enough elevation to give you views across the surrounding farmland, and on a clear day you can see properly far. It's not a dramatic landscape - no mountains, no lochs - but there's something satisfying about a straightforward woodland wander that doesn't require technical gear or a four-hour commitment.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's ideal if you want a decent stretch of the legs without the serious hillwalking, and families with kids aged eight and up should find enough interest to keep going for an hour or so. The paths are generally well-trodden, though it's not a manicured tourist attraction - expect mud after rain and the occasional fallen branch.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so take water and wear proper boots. The free admission is a bonus, and you can fit this in easily if you're staying at Aden Caravan & Camping just 2.4 miles away - a nice spot to base yourself for exploring this corner of Aberdeenshire. Spring and autumn are best; summer can feel a bit airless under the tree cover, and winter gets properly wet and dark early. Allow 90 minutes for a steady loop if you're not rushing.
