Wind Egg Plantation

The woodland walks at Wind Egg Plantation near Thirsk are straightforward and pleasant - nothing flashy, but exactly what you need if you're based at Hillside Caravan Park and fancy a proper forest ramble without driving far.

It's a genuine working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction. You're walking among established trees with the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Yorkshire in the first place. The paths are manageable underfoot and don't demand serious hiking boots, which means families with younger kids can actually manage it without complaints.

Allows a couple of hours if you meander, but you could knock out a quick forty-minute loop if time's tight. There's something quite restorative about forests in this part of England - they're not dramatic, but they're real. Bring the dog if you've got one; these places typically allow them off-lead once you're away from the road.

It works well as a half-day stop between exploring Thirsk's market square and heading to other North Yorkshire parks for a longer stay. The plantation itself doesn't charge admission as far as I can tell, and there's no visitor centre to queue at. Just turn up, park sensibly, and walk.
