Wind Down Woods

You'll find yourself on proper woodland trails the moment you step into Wind Down Woods, just outside Bridgwater. The reserve isn't trying to be fancy - it's straightforward walking territory through mixed forest with the kind of peace you can actually hear. Paths wind through native trees, and if you're lucky with timing, you'll spot woodland birds and maybe a roe deer slipping between the oaks.

This is walker territory, mainly. The routes aren't strenuous, so families with younger kids can manage a decent loop without complaints, though it won't occupy a full day. History buffs won't find much to get excited about - there's no ancient tumuli or crumbling walls, just woods being woods. But that's rather the point. If your holiday park routine includes wanting to escape the caravans and awnings for a couple of hours, this scratches that itch.

Admission appears free, which helps. Bridgwater's close by if you need supplies or a decent cafe afterwards. You're well-positioned if you're based at Secret Valley or Moorhouse Campsite - both are within a short drive and have excellent ratings. The reserve works best as a mid-morning walk before heading back for lunch, or an early evening slot when the light's softer and fewer people are about. Bring waterproofs though; Somerset woodland stays damp longer than you'd expect, even after rain's passed through.
