Wilton Windmill

The flint-faced mill stands alone on high ground east of Pewsey, commanding views across the Vale of Pewsey like it's been keeping watch for centuries. Built in 1821, Wilton Windmill is a proper working example of brick and flint construction, the sort of landmark that stops you mid-drive and makes you think about pulling over.

It's a straightforward affair - you can see it from the road easily enough, and there's enough space to park and have a proper look at the structure itself. The real draw is the setting rather than access to interiors, though if you catch it when volunteer-run open days happen, you get to climb inside and see the original milling machinery. Those visits aren't frequent, so check ahead before making a special trip.

History types will appreciate the engineering - flint mills are relatively rare survivors - but casual tourists often find it more of a visual stop than a destination itself. Give it thirty minutes maximum unless you're timing a visit with an open day. The views across the chalk hills are genuine rewards for the short detour though, especially on clear mornings when mist still clings to the valley floor.
