Wilson Monument

The monument itself is a chunky sandstone tower planted on Stirling's skyline, visible from half the town. It's dedicated to William Wallace - the real one, not the Hollywood version - and climbing the spiral stairs gets you proper views across the Forth Valley. The walk up Spittal Street to reach it is steep enough to earn the effort, and you're rewarded with 360-degree sight lines that make clear why Stirling mattered strategically.

History buffs will spend a solid hour here, reading the plaques and soaking in the Wallace connection. Families with energetic kids will manage 20 minutes max - the climb's fine but there's not much else to do once you've reached the top. It's free and accessible, though opening hours aren't consistently publicised, so check ahead.

This fits well with a caravan break at Witches Craig, just over the way. The park's a decent base for exploring Stirling's other attractions - the castle is the obvious draw, but the monument gives you something quieter and less crowded. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you'll have the tower mostly to yourself. It's not a half-day undertaking, more of a 45-minute stop between other things. Worth doing if you're in town, but don't rearrange your itinerary specially for it.
