Wills Neck

The walk up Wills Neck rewards you with one of the Quantocks' best viewpoints - on a clear day you're looking straight across to Exmoor and the Bristol Channel beyond. It's a proper summit despite being only 1,269 feet, and the approach from Holford is steep enough to make you feel like you've actually earned the view.

The route takes roughly an hour up, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath. The moorland slopes are exposed, so wind can be a real factor - I've had my hat nearly blown clean off in April. What you get at the top is genuinely worth it though: heather and gorse in late summer, Bronze Age earthworks if you know where to look, and that sudden drop of vista that makes you understand why people bother with these Somerset hills at all.

Historyish types will appreciate the old fortification, though there's not much left to examine. Families with capable walkers will find it manageable; younger kids might struggle with the gradient and lose interest halfway. It's not a dramatic peak like Exmoor gets, but it's honest walking with a decent payoff.

Go early if the weather looks decent - the forecast up here changes faster than you'd believe. Free to visit, naturally, and best tackled in dry conditions when the path doesn't turn into a bog.
