Willows Nature Reserve

The Willows Nature Reserve sits just outside Wisbech, a proper wetland site where you can actually hear the birds before you spot them. It's the sort of place where an afternoon slips away without you noticing - reedy channels, open water, and enough birdlife to keep binoculars busy for hours.

What you're really here for is the walking. Trails wind through the reserve with viewing platforms at key points, and depending on the season you'll clock everything from lapwings to marsh harriers. Spring and autumn are when things get properly lively if migration interests you. Winter's quieter but the water is often clearer and you'll have the place more or less to yourself.

Families do well here if they've got kids old enough to manage a bit of patient watching - toddlers will find it tedious after twenty minutes. Serious birdwatchers and photographers should budget three to four hours. The walking is flat and easy, which is both a blessing and means there's no escaping the wind if it's up.
