Willow Park

The shallow pools at Willow Park catch the light in ways that make you actually stop walking and just look. It's a proper nature reserve on the edge of Leicester, the kind of place where you're genuinely likely to spot something worth binoculars - marsh harriers, lapwings, the lot.

What you get is a decent stretch of wetland with viewing areas dotted about, letting you poke around without trampling everything. The walking is gentle, mostly flat, and takes anything from forty minutes to two hours depending on how serious you are about the bird spotting. Bring a camera if you're into that sort of thing; bring patience if you're not.

Kids will either love it or be bored within the hour - depends entirely on whether they're the type to stand still watching water. Proper nature enthusiasts and weekend birdwatchers will want to return multiple times, especially as the reserve shifts through the seasons. Winter's supposedly good for overwintering visitors.

The reserve sits close enough to Leicester that it works as a break between other activities, rather than a day-long destination. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Holly Farm Fishery or Fox's Furrow are both within striking distance - it's a sensible morning walk before heading elsewhere. The flexibility is the real draw. Admission appears to be free, which removes the risk element entirely. Just turn up, see what's about, leave when you've had enough.
