About Willington Wetlands Nature Reserve
You get lakes, reedbed, wet grassland and woodland all tangled together in what was once a coal-fired power station. The trails wind through it all, and depending on the season you'll spot waders, wildfowl, maybe even a kingfisher if you're patient and keep your voice down. Spring and autumn are brilliant for migration, though honestly there's always something moving about.
It's managed by the Wildlife Trust and costs nothing to visit, which is rare enough these days. You can do a quick 45-minute loop if the weather's turning, or take a couple of hours and actually see something. Binoculars essential. Sensible shoes more so - the paths get boggy after rain.
Derby's just down the road, and if you're based at Broadleaves Glamping or Hill Farm Camping nearby, this works perfectly as a morning mission before heading into town or exploring further afield. Kids will find it interesting if they're the nature-focused type, but it's not the sort of place that keeps toddlers entertained for long. Adults though, especially walkers keen on wildlife, will think it's exactly what a nature reserve should be.
