Willington Wetlands Nature Reserve

Water stretches out flat and still, bordered by reed beds that whisper when the wind picks up properly. Willington Wetlands is a proper working nature reserve just outside Derby - the sort of place you visit because you want to see what's actually there, not because it's on some list of must-dos.

It's a restored wetland site, which means someone's done the hard graft of turning what was once industrial land back into habitat. You'll spot water birds aplenty if you time it right - grebes, herons, the occasional rarity that gets the binoculars crowd excited. There are footpaths threading through, though they can get muddy when it's been wet, so come prepared.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it. If you've got kids under ten, honestly, an hour might be the limit unless they're genuinely into spotting things. There's no visitor centre, no cafe - just the wetland and the path. That's either brilliant or a bit sparse depending on what you're after.

Free to access, which is refreshing. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing it properly with binoculars and a field guide. It slots in nicely with a stay at Peake's Retreats, five miles south - you could combine it with a walk round the nearby countryside without needing to chase crowds.

Best visited early morning or dusk when the birds are most active. Spring and autumn migrations make it worth a special trip.
