Willingham Woods

Walk far enough into Willingham Woods and you'll forget you're in Lincolnshire at all. The trees close in properly here, blocking out the flat farmland that dominates the region, and the paths wind through what feels like genuine countryside rather than the scrubby bits you often get round Market Rasen.

It's a straightforward woodland walk - nothing dramatic, no waterfalls or viewpoints that'll make your Instagram followers swoon. What you get instead is peace, which honestly feels rarer than it should. The paths are decent underfoot, though muddy patches appear after rain. Bring proper boots rather than trainers if the weather's been wet.

This works well for families wanting a proper walk without the commitment of the Lincolnshire Wolds, just six miles south. Kids who can manage a mile or two won't complain, though there's not enough excitement here to hold attention if they're the type who need a destination. Serious walkers will find it a bit tame - it's more of a pleasant plod than a challenge.

With Into the Wild Glamping right on the doorstep (literally 0.4 miles away) and Lindsey Trail just down the road, the woods slot neatly into a weekend break. Pop in for an hour or two between other activities rather than making it your main event. Free to access, which is worth knowing - there's no gate fee to navigate. Best visited in autumn when the light filters through the canopy properly, or spring when it's less muddy. Worth the detour from Market Rasen if you're staying nearby, but plan something else for the afternoon.
