William Wallace Statue

The statue stands on the Abbey Craig, overlooking Stirling like some stern Victorian reminder that Scotland takes its heroes seriously. It's not subtle - a towering bronze figure of William Wallace, the 13th-century knight, gazing out across the town he defended. Getting up there involves a proper walk, mind you. The climb takes about twenty minutes from the base, and it's steady going, but the views from the top repay the effort - you see right across to the Pentland Hills and the sprawl of central Scotland.

This isn't a place where you'll spend hours inside a gallery, despite being listed as one. It's more a monument-slash-viewpoint combo, really. History types will get a kick out of standing where Wallace did, plus there's an exhibition space covering his life and the Scottish Wars of Independence. Families with older kids who can manage the walk will find it educational without being dull. Younger children might find it a bit of a trudge for what amounts to a statue and a view.

Free to access the grounds, though parking can be tight during summer. Go early if you can. If you're staying at Witches Craig Caravan Park - just 2.6 miles away - it's an obvious stop on a Stirling itinerary. Pair it with the castle and the town's medieval streets for a proper day out. You'll want an hour or so here, including the walk.
