Willen Lake

The lake sits just outside Milton Keynes, a proper working nature reserve rather than a manicured country park. Two lakes, really - the original Willen Lake and the newer Willen Lake South, both formed from old clay pits. Walk the perimeter and you'll spot Canada geese, cormorants, the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky and patient.

It's genuinely peaceful, which feels odd given how close it is to the town. The northern shore has woodland; the southern end is more open. You can do a full circuit in about an hour if you're not birding, longer if you are. Bring binoculars. Bring a camera. Leave the noise of Milton Keynes behind.

Family groups will find it manageable - the paths are decent and there's space for kids to burn off energy without much risk. Serious birdwatchers return regularly. Dog walkers love it. Anyone after a quiet break while camping at Adventurers Village or Gullivers just down the road will find exactly what they need.

Free to access and open all hours, more or less. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when the light's good and you're more likely to see wildlife. Winter brings visiting wildfowl; spring is nesting season. Summer can be busy with families, which takes the edge off the peace. Nothing fancy here - no café, minimal facilities - but that's rather the point. If you want untidy nature that actually looks lived-in, this works.
