Wildlife Trust BCN Beechwoods Nature Reserve

Ancient beech trees tower overhead as you push deeper into this 45-hectare woodland reserve just outside Cambridge. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shop, no café, just proper woodland walking through what feels like a corner of the Cotswolds transplanted into East Anglia.

The reserve is managed by the Wildlife Trust BCN and works best for anyone genuinely interested in woodland ecology rather than families wanting a quick stroll. You'll spot native trees, woodland birds, and if you're lucky, deer moving between the glades. The walking trails are straightforward enough - mostly well-trodden paths - though the terrain can get muddy after rain, so decent boots matter.

Allow two to three hours to do this properly. Rush it and you miss the point entirely. There's something meditative about the older sections where the beeches have grown massive and twisted, creating a natural cathedral effect.

It's free to access, which is increasingly rare for quality woodland in the south. Combine this with a night at one of the nearby caravan sites - Cherry Hinton is barely 10 minutes away, or push out to Fen Meadows if you want glamping with a bit more comfort. The reserve works as a proper anchor for a quieter Cambridge holiday, especially if you're trying to escape the colleges and punts without actually leaving the area.
