Wilden Covert

Dense woodland carpets this slice of Worcestershire countryside, offering proper forest walks without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. Wilden Covert spreads across mature mixed woodland near Stourport-on-Severn, with well-trodden paths winding through oak, beech and birch. The canopy creates a lovely dappled light effect on sunny days, while autumn transforms the place into a photographer's dream.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty to explore here. The terrain isn't too challenging, making it suitable for pushchair-friendly routes, though you'll want sturdy wheels for the earthier sections. Dog walkers absolutely love the place - plenty of space for four-legged friends to roam safely away from traffic.

Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. I spotted several woodpecker species during my visit, plus the usual woodland suspects like nuthatches and treecreepers. The forest feels genuinely wild in places, with fallen logs creating natural obstacles that children seem magnetically drawn to climb.

Allow a good hour or two for a proper walk, longer if you're planning a picnic. The area works brilliantly as a day out from nearby holiday parks like Little Lakes or Hopleys Family Camping, especially when you need a break from organised activities. Just remember to check conditions after heavy rain - some paths can get properly muddy.
