Wilcrick Hill

The walk up Wilcrick Hill near Chepstow isn't long, but it's steep enough to get your heart going. You're looking at maybe 20 minutes of proper climbing through woodland before you break out onto the summit, where the views across the Wye Valley stop you in your tracks. On a clear day you can see right across into England - the Forest of Dean stretches out on the far side. The hill itself is modest in height but feels wilder than its size suggests, with that sudden exposure at the top that makes it feel more significant than the map would have you believe.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this one. It's not a tourist trap with ice cream vans and gift shops - just you, the bracken, and decent views. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine, though the steep bit at the end might frustrate the reluctant ones. You'd want to allow an hour total from the car park, perhaps 90 minutes if you're keen to sit at the top with a thermos.

The walk is completely free and year-round accessible. Spring's probably nicest when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn light through the trees has its own appeal. Winter clears the haze and gives you sharper views, but the path gets muddy. It fits naturally into a wider ramble around the Monmouth area, and if you're based at Penhein Glamping just four miles away, it's an easy morning jaunt before a long lunch somewhere in Chepstow.
