Wigmore Valley Park

The valley floor opens up suddenly as you drop down from the lane near Hitchin - all chalk grassland and scrub, with proper views across to the far ridge. Wigmore Valley Park is one of those places that rewards a bit of effort to find, tucked away enough that you won't stumble into crowds of day-trippers.

It's a nature reserve, so the draw is the habitat itself rather than any single feature. The chalk grassland supports orchids in early summer - not spectacular blooms, but the sort of thing that makes botanists go quiet. Chalk-loving butterflies work the flowers. You'll see common species mostly, but the occasional rare one keeps things interesting. The scrubland edges hold breeding birds.

Walkers get the most from this spot. It's not a circular route-map kind of place - more a case of knowing roughly where you're going and wandering the paths to see what's about. Budget a couple of hours if you're serious, less if you just fancy a stroll. Spring and early summer are best, when the flowers are out and the birds are still singing.

The reserve works well as a half-day slot if you're basing yourself at Almshoe Glamping nearby. It's the sort of place that pairs nicely with other local walking - Hitchin itself has good pubs and a workable high street for afterwards. Not a white-knuckle adventure, but solid, honest nature reserve walking. Worth knowing about if you like your countryside quiet.
