Wicksteed Park Main Entrance

The gates here have been welcoming families since 1921, and you can still feel that old-fashioned seaside-park energy even though you're bang in the middle of Northamptonshire. Wicksteed Park sprawls across 56 acres just outside Kettering with proper rides, gardens, a lake, and enough entertainment to keep kids occupied for a full day without breaking the bank.

Inside you'll find everything from gentle fairground rides for toddlers through to roller coasters that actually get your heart going. The boating lake is genuinely lovely - you can hire a pedalo or just watch the ducks while eating chips on the grass. There's also a play area, adventure golf, and if the weather turns, an indoor soft play setup. The gardens are worth a wander too, especially if you go early before the crowds arrive.

It's the sort of place families with younger children absolutely get the most from - older teenagers might find it a bit tame. Admission is free but the rides work on a token system, so budget accordingly. Allow at least half a day, though you could easily stretch it to a full day if the kids are having fun.

If you're staying at Northfield Farm or Lakeview Caravan Park nearby, this makes a solid rainy-day backup or a proper full-day outing. It's not trying to be Alton Towers, and that's rather the point. Honest fun without the pretence.
