Whittle Car

There's a proper gem tucked into the woodland just outside Leeds - Whittle Car, a forest that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from the city. The place is essentially a working woodland where locals come to walk, stretch their legs, and remember there are trees within spitting distance of the M1.

You'll find yourself on decent woodland paths with the kind of dappled light that makes you forget you're in West Yorkshire. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than traffic. Dogs love it here, and families with primary-school age kids will get a good hour or two of exploring in before anyone starts moaning about being tired. The woodland itself is nothing to get sentimental about - it's not dramatic or rare - but it's peaceful and real, which counts for something.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Haighfield or Glenfield, this is exactly the sort of spot to burn off energy before dinner. It's free to access and takes about as long as you fancy - twenty minutes if you're just after fresh air, an hour if you want to actually wander. Bring wellies if it's been wet; the paths get boggy in patches.

Honestly? It's not worth a special trip from across Yorkshire. But if you're based at one of the holiday parks for a week, it's a solid place to spend a morning. No crowds, no entry fees, just forest. That's rather nice actually.
