Whiten Head

The drive up to Whiten Head feels like you're leaving the map behind altogether. This is the far northwest tip of the Scottish mainland, and the cliffs here drop sheer into the North Sea with a force that makes you grip the edge of your phone a bit tighter.

It's a proper walk to reach the headland itself - nothing technical, but the path can be boggy and the wind doesn't mess about. Once you're there, the view swings 360 degrees across open water towards Cape Wrath and beyond. On a clear day you can see forever. On a grey day, which is most days, the drama is honestly better - the light shifts across the Atlantic and the isolation hits differently.

Walkers should allow two hours minimum for the round trip from where you can park near Laid. Bring decent boots and don't underestimate the Scottish weather, even in summer. History buffs might find the remoteness itself more compelling than any plaque - this is land that's resisted civilisation for good reason.

Whiten Head works beautifully as part of a wider loop if you're staying at Sango Sands Oasis near Durness - that's easily your best base for exploring this corner of the Highlands. The caravan park itself is a comfortable enough spot, and you'll have proper shelter after a day getting windswept out on the headland. The isolation here is the whole point. Come if you want space and weather and nothing polished.
