White Knowes

The walk up White Knowes is straightforward and rewarding without being exhausting. You're looking at roughly 45 minutes from the car park near Lochwinnoch to the summit - hardly demanding, but the views across the Clyde Valley make it well worth the effort. On a clear day you can see for miles, which isn't always guaranteed in this part of Renfrewshire.

It's one of those hills that works perfectly for families who want a proper hill experience without the full commitment of a Munro. Kids won't lose patience on the way up. The terrain is manageable, boggy in places after rain, and the path is clear enough that you won't spend half the time navigating.

This is moorland walking at its most accessible. No technical scrambling, no exposure to make nervous types anxious. The landscape is open and rolling, with the kind of views that make you glad you got out of the house. Serious hikers might find it a bit tame, but that's not really the point of White Knowes.

You could do this as a morning jaunt and still have plenty of afternoon left. If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean nearby, this makes an excellent warm-up walk for the area. Lochwinnoch itself has decent amenities, so grab a coffee before heading out. There's no visitor infrastructure on the hill itself, so bring water and something to eat if you plan to linger at the top.
