White Horse Hill

The White Horse itself isn't actually on the hill - it's cut into the chalk below it, which means the best views come from standing on White Horse Hill looking down at your own feet, figuratively speaking. The 374-metre summit sits just outside Wantage and offers proper expansive views across the Vale of White Horse and beyond. On a clear day you can see for miles, which makes the modest climb absolutely worthwhile.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths up are straightforward enough - nothing technical - and you can loop it with walks around the nearby Uffington Castle hillfort if you've got the energy. Most people allow a couple of hours including the view time, though fit types will do it faster. The wind can be fierce up here even when it's calm below, so dress accordingly.

It's free to visit and there's limited parking at the base. Go early if you're visiting in summer weekends, as the car park fills quickly. Autumn and winter are actually better - clearer air, fewer people, same cracking views.
