White Hill

White Hill sits on the edge of North Yorkshire moorland, offering one of those walks where the effort genuinely matches the view. It's a proper fell rather than a dramatic peak - you won't find dramatic cliff edges or Alpine scenery - but what you get is the sense of real height on a relatively modest climb from Northallerton way.

The walk itself takes around two hours there and back depending on your pace and which route you tackle. The summit rewards you with sweeping views across the Vale of Mowbray and back towards the Pennines. On a clear day, it's the sort of place where you suddenly understand why people bother with hillwalking. On a murky one, you're essentially staring into cloud.

Historians and walkers will get the most from this one - it's not somewhere you'll find a visitor centre or facilities, just proper moorland walking country. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog without the payoff of a café at the top.

If you're staying at Whorlton Pods or Peaks and Pods nearby, White Hill slots nicely into a long weekend of moorland walks without requiring a full day out. Park yourself in the pods, wake up early, and you're on the hill within half an hour of Northallerton. Go in autumn when the bracken's turning gold - it transforms the entire walk.
