Whit Fell

The walk up Whit Fell from Leyburn is straightforward enough, and on a clear day the views across Wensleydale make the effort worthwhile. It's not a dramatic summit - more of a gentle moorland rise than a proper peak - but that's rather the point. You get proper Yorkshire Dales landscape without the scrambling or the crowds you'd find on higher fells.

The route itself takes around two hours from town, which makes it ideal for a half-day outing if you're staying at one of the nearby parks. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the moorland bit dull unless they're keen walkers already. History types won't find much at the top itself, but the fell sits in country steeped in Wensleydale's past, and you pass plenty of stone walls and old field systems on the way up.

If you're based at Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park or Eastfield Glamping Farm - both solid choices within striking distance - Whit Fell works as a flexible add-on. There's no visitor centre, no café at the summit, no faffing about. Just moorland, good views, and genuine fresh air. Start early on a settled morning; the weather can turn quickly, and the fell offers little shelter once you're up there. Free to walk, obviously, and worth the time if you like steady uphill country rather than dramatic peaks.
