Whispering Knights

Four ancient stones stand in a field near Chipping Norton, worn smooth by millennia and weather. The Whispering Knights is a Neolithic long barrow - what's left of a burial chamber that's roughly five thousand years old. You'll find it beside the road between Chipping Norton and Enstone, easy enough to spot if you know where to look, though the signposting could be better.

What you actually get is a close encounter with genuine prehistory. The stones are modest in scale, nothing like Stonehenge or the big Cotswold monuments, but that's rather the point. There's no interpretation board, no visitor centre, no queue. Just four sarsen stones in a field and the sense that you're standing where Neolithic people left their dead. Archaeologists reckon it's one of the oldest structures in the county.

This works best if you're already walking the Cotswolds or camped at one of the nearby sites - Cotswold Hills Country Park is only 2.4 miles away and makes a proper base. The Knights reward a detour rather than a special trip on their own. Allow twenty minutes, half an hour max. Bring wellies if it's been wet. It's free and accessible year-round, though there's nothing to stop the farmer's sheep wandering through.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Kids? They'll manage five minutes before asking what's for lunch. The real appeal is the quietness and the weight of age - you're looking at something that predates the pyramids.
