The Whisky Museum in Dufftown is one of those places that works even if you're not a whisky obsessive. Set in the heart of Speyside, where the stuff is actually made, it gives proper context to what's in your glass - and there's a fair bit of that too.

Inside, you'll find the usual museum fare: old bottles, distillery equipment, photographs documenting Scotland's whisky-making heritage. What saves it from feeling like a textbook lesson is that it's genuinely local. The volunteers running the place actually know their subject, and the exhibits reflect the specific story of Dufftown and Keith rather than trying to cover all of Scottish whisky in one go.

Families with teenagers will get more out of this than young children - reading-heavy, not many interactive elements. But if someone in your party is into whisky or Scottish history, they'll happily spend an hour here. Walking enthusiasts heading to Speyside for the distillery trails will find this a useful primer before hitting the real thing.

The big draw: it's free. Completely free. That alone makes it worth a stop if you're based nearby, say at Hillside Havens just down the road, or passing through Keith. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much you linger over the displays.
