Whatside Hills

The walk up Whatside Hills rewards you with proper 360-degree views across Renfrewshire - on a clear day you can see right across to the Clyde Valley and beyond. It's not a massive undertaking, more of a solid afternoon ramble than a full day commitment, and the terrain is manageable enough for reasonably fit walkers without being boring.

Lochwinnoch sits just down the road, which is handy because the village has cafes and shops if you need to fuel up beforehand. The hills themselves offer that rare Scottish Lowlands combination of decent elevation gain without the technical scrambling you'd get further west in Ayrshire or Dumfries and Galloway. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit long depending on their stamina.

What makes it work is the variety. You're not staring at moorland the whole way - there's proper woodland sections, and the views properly change as you climb. The Pods at Auchenhean, six miles away, is a solid base if you're planning a few days exploring the area. It's rated brilliantly and gives you that glamping comfort without the hotel faffing.

Timing-wise, spring through autumn is your sweet spot. Winter can be boggy and grey. Allow three hours for a steady pace with stops for photos. There's no entry fee or booking system - just go. It's straightforward enough that you don't need a guide, but an OS map or offline download is worth carrying because signal gets dodgy higher up.
