Wharf Pit 3

The water here is startlingly clear - almost unnaturally so for a former quarry. Wharf Pit 3 is one of three connected lakes just outside Hinckley, formed where gravel extraction left deep holes that eventually filled with groundwater. It's a proper working fishery, so you're sharing space with anglers who know these waters inside out, but there's plenty of room and the vibe is calm rather than territorial.

What you actually do here depends entirely on whether you fish. If you do, the pike and carp populations are decent and the banks are well-maintained. Non-anglers can walk the perimeter - a straightforward circuit that takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace - though I'll be honest, it's not dramatically scenic. The appeal is low-key: water, trees, the occasional heron, birdsong. It works well as a morning or late-afternoon stop rather than a half-day destination.

The location makes sense if you're basing yourself at Fortway Farm Leisure & Fishery five miles away. Combine it with a proper walk elsewhere - the surrounding countryside has better trails - rather than treating it as a standalone visit. Families with young children might find half an hour enough; walkers will prefer to move on. Best in late spring and early autumn when the water levels are steady and the banks aren't boggy.
