Westonbirt Gardens

The arboretum spreads across 600 acres near Stroud, and you'll spend a good three to four hours wandering between specimen trees from across the globe. It's one of those places where you actually see the point of trees - not just as a backdrop, but as individual characters with their own shapes, colours and stories. Maples in autumn are spectacular; the Japanese sections feel genuinely transportative.

Walkers will love the network of paths, though it can get muddy after rain and some routes feel quite long if you've got small children in tow. The layout means you can dip in for an hour if you're pushed for time, but you'd be missing half the appeal. Spring brings the magnolias and cherry blossom crowds; autumn is quieter and frankly more interesting.

It's a paid attraction - not cheap, mind you - and worth checking opening times and entry fees before you head over from nearby Stroud. The tearoom is decent but not exceptional.

If you're based at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park or Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm, this works well as a morning or afternoon outing on a park holiday. It pairs nicely with a walk around Symonds Yat or the Forest of Dean if you're after a proper outdoor break. Families who enjoy nature trails rather than theme parks will get genuine value here; those expecting entertainment attractions might find it a bit slow.
