The arboretum here spreads across 600 acres of managed woodland, and it's genuinely the sort of place where you can wander for hours without feeling like you've covered much ground at all. Paths wind between champion trees - some planted centuries ago - with the kind of peaceful quiet you don't get near Stroud itself.

What you're actually doing is walking through what amounts to a living catalogue of trees from across the world. Japanese maples, heritage oaks, rare conifers tucked into glades. The seasonality matters here - autumn brings proper colour, spring is when the magnolias make you stop and stare, but even in winter the structure of the place reveals itself rather beautifully. There's a lake, various waymarked trails, and spots to sit that feel properly removed from the surrounding Cotswold farmland.

It works well for families because kids can burn energy without needing constant activity, and there are few sharp drops or technical hazards. Serious walkers and tree enthusiasts will spend considerably longer here, picking out specimens and mapping routes. Most people allow two to four hours, though you could easily make a day of it.

If you're based at Burton Hill or the glamping setup at Whychurch Farm nearby, this is the sort of morning or afternoon outing that doesn't require planning beyond decent shoes. The admission is modest, and there's rarely a queue. Go when you're in the mood to slow down rather than tick boxes.
