Weston Plats (NT)

The Iron Age hill fort at Weston Plats sits on high ground above Sidmouth, offering proper views across the Axe Valley if you can be bothered with the walk up. It's not dramatic - no towering ramparts or visitor centre with a café - just earthworks, banks and ditches that have survived two thousand years remarkably well.

What you're looking at are defensive ditches and ramparts that would have enclosed an ancient settlement. The site itself is quiet, windswept, and genuinely atmospheric once you're standing there. Most people miss it entirely because there's no car park, no sign, and no entry fee - just a grassy area that doesn't immediately shout "archaeological site".

Histories buffs will appreciate the straightforward evidence of Iron Age occupation. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming after twenty minutes - there's nothing to touch or climb on, and the historical context requires some explanation. Walkers, though, will get something worthwhile: it's a proper hike from Sidmouth, and the views on a clear day justify the effort.

Being National Trust-owned, it's free to visit. You'll need a decent hour including the walk from town, longer if you're taking photos or lingering over the views. Spring and early summer are best - the ground dries out, and the hillside greens up nicely.

If you're staying at Oakdown or Ladram Bay, both nearby parks, this makes a solid morning expedition before heading down to the beach. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's the sort of layered, quiet thing that makes a seaside trip feel more complete.
