Westley Wood

The woodland around Stroud is proper dense in places, and Westley Wood is one of those stretches where you can actually lose the sound of traffic. It's not a managed attraction with visitor centres or marked trails - just proper forest, the kind locals walk through without thinking twice about it.

What you get is canopy, plenty of it. Ancient-looking oaks, patches of bracken underfoot, the occasional muddy section even after dry spells. The wood sits close enough to Stroud that you can reach it without much faffing about, which makes it ideal if you're camping at Cirencester Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite six miles away and fancy a proper walk without driving halfway across Gloucestershire.

Walkers will appreciate it more than families with small children - there's no playground nonsense or obvious trail markers, just the woods themselves. You need decent boots and a sense of direction, or failing that, a phone with a map app. The light changes constantly through the canopy, which sounds poetic but also means it's genuinely atmospheric. Twenty minutes in and you've genuinely forgotten you're near a town.

Allow a couple of hours if you want to actually explore rather than just march through. Early morning visits are best - fewer dog walkers, more wildlife actually visible. Not Instagram-famous, not touristy, just a proper slice of Gloucestershire woodland. Worth the detour if you're basing yourself locally and want somewhere that feels genuinely away from things.
