Westie Park

The walk into Westie Park takes you through proper Highland landscape - moorland that opens up suddenly onto wetland where the light just sits differently on the water. It's a nature reserve that takes itself seriously, with pathways threading through reed beds and marshy ground where you'll spot waders and wildfowl if you're patient and quiet. The birdwatching here is genuinely excellent, especially in spring and autumn when migrants pass through. Bring binoculars and sensible boots - the ground's boggy and unforgiving in places.

This is absolutely one for the birders and patient nature types rather than a quick tick-box visit. You're looking at a couple of hours minimum to do it properly, longer if you're serious about spotting something rare. The nearest town is Montrose, about half an hour's drive, which gives you a sense of how remote it feels despite being accessible.

It works brilliantly as part of a longer Aberdeenshire nature trail. St Cyrus Holiday Park sits about six miles away and makes a solid base if you're combining this with coastal walks - the cliffs at St Cyrus itself are worth the drive. Families with young children might find it a bit sluggish without the drama of mountains or beaches, but older kids who can handle a slower pace will surprise you with what they spot. Free to access, as most proper nature reserves are. Go early morning for the best light and the most active wildlife.
